I am currently on a two-semester co-op rotation (January-August) back at Motus Global in Massapequa, NY (see the South Shore on the above map!). It is a very exciting time to be working with this small startup company, as they are about to release a game-changing wearable technology device that may save baseball? There are other many exciting projects being worked on, with the goal of improving athlete performance and preventing injury. It's a perfect job to combine my love for sports with my Biomedical Engineering education.
So, about this project. Long (not very long actually) story short, upon reflecting on my experiences from my co-op rotation here last summer, I realized the great potential for turning this 8 months into a time for adventures, meaningful adventures that is. Brief background research into Long Island revealed a rich history and an abundance of opportunities to experience the lasting effects of history on present-day society and culture. Thus, this global studies experiential learning project was developed with the University of Cincinnati Honors Program.

The main outcome of this project is an ethnography (fancy term for social science research on people/places) of Long Island with a focus on four key thematic areas: social influences, economics, culture, and geography. Each 'adventure' (visiting an attraction, attending an event, etc.) will pertain to one of these four areas. For each adventure, I will briefly report the significance and history, the modern stereotypes, document my personal experience, and analyze the discrepancies and/or findings. It is my hope that this experience will help others 1. understand the influences on my personal growth throughout my time living here and 2. have a more accurate picture and better understanding of Long Island.
For a more detailed description of this experience, feel free to read my full proposal below! Otherwise, I hope you enjoy learning about Long Island and viewing my experiences!
